The Maternal Fetal Medicine Center (Perinatology) in HIMA•San Pablo Hospital Caguas and Fajardo is headed by Dr. Jesus R. Alvarez Pérez. Alvarez is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology with a sub-specialty in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Dr. Alvarez has over 20 published works regarding perinatolgy including several chapters in OBGYN textbooks. Perinatolgy is responsible for addressing high-risk pregnancies. A high-risk pregnancy includes pregnancies with medical problems (lupus, diabetes, hypertension, HIV, etc.), pregnancies of mothers over 35, pregnancies by technological methods of reproductive assistance and multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets, etc.). A perinatologist specializes in performing pregnancy sonograms, genetic counseling and in-utero fetal treatment.
